In Uganda's remote far north-east, hard against the borders of South Sudan and Kenya, Kidepo Valley National Park covers 1,442 square kilometres of rugged savannah beneath Mount Morungole, whose peak rises to 2,750 metres. First gazetted in 1962, Kidepo remains, by a wide margin, Uganda's least-visited major park — a genuine reward for travelers willing to make the journey.
Kidepo is the only Uganda park with a resident cheetah population, alongside more than fifty Rothschild's giraffe, striped hyena, bat-eared foxes and lesser kudu rarely found elsewhere in the country. The Narus Valley's seasonal rivers and dramatic mountain backdrops give the park a scale and wildness that feel closer to a remembered idea of Africa than a typical safari circuit.
The semi-nomadic Karamojong people, whose pastoral cattle-herding culture has changed little for generations, live in the region surrounding the park, and cultural visits arranged respectfully add a genuinely distinct dimension unavailable anywhere else in Uganda.
At roughly 520 kilometres by road from Kampala, Kidepo is a serious undertaking overland; most of our itineraries use scheduled light-aircraft flights instead, typically combining Kidepo with Murchison Falls on the same northern circuit.
